Hoisin sauce is an Asian condiment used in a variety of ways because it adds to the flavor of the food. &nbsp;It&#8217;s usually dark, thick, and it can resemble jelly in stores. &nbsp;The ingredients are often not that healthy, and depending upon the brand, may even contain&nbsp;seafood derivatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, it\u00a0is always safer, better, and healthier to make it from scratch. If you ever need a wonderful, plant-based hoisin sauce, use the below\u00a0recipe. \u00a0Unlike the store-bought\u00a0sauce, my homemade version is thick liquid, (not a thick jelly). \u00a0Both the peanut butter and the molasses add to the sauce&#8217;s thickness in one version, but the cornstarch helps the other thicken. \u00a0Both versions yield around one cup ( ~3\/4 c.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recipes:  1. Hoisin Sauce with peanut butter \/ 2. without peanut butter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RECIPE #1: Hoisin Sauce (w\/ Peanut Butter)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u00bc cup Bragg\u2019s Liquid Aminos<\/li><li>3&nbsp;Tablespoons molasses*<\/li><li>2 Tablespoons agave nectar or more, optional (if you like sweet sauce)<\/li><li>2 Tablespoons peanut butter (your choice)<\/li><li>2 teaspoons organic roasted sesame oil (expeller pressed)<\/li><li>1 garlic clove, finely minced or \u00bd teaspoon minced garlic<\/li><li>2 teaspoons lime juice<\/li><li>\u00bd teaspoon chickpea miso, optional (adds depth)<\/li><li>\u00bd teaspoon blackstrap molasses, optional (adds depth)<\/li><li>\u00bc teaspoon black pepper substitute, such as Monk&#8217;s pepper, grounded<\/li><li>Pinch of cayenne pepper, optional (adds depth)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><br>Whisk or blend all ingredients until smooth. Refrigerate. &nbsp;Store for up to three months.<br><br><strong>Note<\/strong>: You may substitute 5 Tablespoons of maple syrup to replace the molasses and agave nectar.  I like the molasses taste, but at times I mix in maples syrup\/honey instead of agave.  Remember, it&#8217;s always up to you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RECIPE #2: Hoisin Sauce (No Peanut Butter)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u00bd &nbsp;c. maple syrup<\/li><li>\u00bc c. Bragg\u2019s Liquid Aminos<\/li><li>\u00bc c. red miso paste<\/li><li>3&nbsp;Tbs. molasses<\/li><li>2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice<\/li><li>2 tsp. roasted sesame oil<\/li><li>1 garlic clove<\/li><li>Tiny pinch of cayenne pepper<\/li><li>1 tsp. organic cornst<em>arch<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Blend all ingredients until smooth.<\/li><li>Pour into an airtight jar.<\/li><li>Refrigerate. &nbsp;Store for up to three months.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Once poured over noodles, be sure to let bubble for 1-3 minutes until cornstarch thickens the sauce.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love rainbow dishes. &nbsp;My&nbsp;veggie lo mein recipe&nbsp;is a delicious rainbow dish that I love and I often make. &nbsp;One of the ingredients is&nbsp;hoisin sauce.
